Gucci Fall 2011 Collection

You don't bring me flowers.

Frida Giannini hasn't left the '70s for this collection but since this is the 1970s by way of the 1940s (in other words, the truly chic and timeless part of the '70s), we can't complain. In fact, complaining seems completely inappropriate when we're faced with such beautiful shapes and vivid colors. Like many of the collections this season, the look is super-luxe and glamorous. One of the inspirations for the collection are the famous Vogue photographs of Anjelica Huston taken by Bob Richardson, which were dripping with '70s decadence (and the occasional Nazi). We like that this collection puts its own twist on all the foofaraw by combining it in eye-searing colors or exaggerating the silhouettes and forms a bit. Everything is tight and tailored to a military precision; that is, when it's not loose and flowy and sexy in that cocaine-fueled '70s way, with sheers and satins, plunging necklines and bared midriffs. The other stated inspiration is a bit more modern: Welsh singer Florence Welch, who's been playing non-stop Chez T Lo ever since we saw Tadashi Shoji march a succession of beautiful gowns down the runway to "Cosmic Love." You can see the Welch influence, especially in the gowns and the vivid colors. We just love the entire thing; a total treat for the eyes. And of all the things to stick out the most in this array of color and texture, it's the cute and chic little pocketbooks half of them are carrying.
